If you’re looking for an extremely broke, kind, and gentle gelding that is useful both in and out of the arena, look no further. “𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒅𝒚”, as he is affectionately known, has a long resume when it comes to experience along with versatility and has proven that he is dependable in sticky situations, trustworthy with any type of rider on his back, and above all else a friend to everyone he meets.

 

Shady has spent most of his riding career being used for all aspects of ranch work from the wheat pastures of Texas to the mountains of Montana. He’ll hold a rope tight if one needs doctoring, is quiet in a branding pen, and is sure footed in all terrains no matter the obstacles presented; whether it’s dodging sage, navigating bogs, maneuvering through rocky terrain, or going through pivots. Shady has also been used to start colts, pony other horses, and has been that steady eddy confidence buddy for younger horses outside. Besides being used for ranch work outside, Shady has also gone to multiple state parks and trail ways and has been a pleasure to ride at all. He’ll cross long, rickety wooden bridges without hesitation, does not mind bike or vehicle traffic, and always appreciates the pets that come from the walkers and runners that never fail to compliment him as they pass by. 

 

Not only does Shady shine outside, but he’s just as lovely in an arena where he demonstrates how a true, one handed broke horse should ride. He has great body control, is fluid in all gaits, and has a light handle that’s all levels friendly. Shady has had all types of riders enjoy him from older, first time riders to experienced horseman to toddlers that are just learning the basics and he’s taken care of each one of them. In 2024, Shady dove into the show world of versatility ranch horse where he has competed in all phases. He may not have started his life as a show horse, but he’s proven an education outside can easily transfer to the show pen as he is a blast to go show and enjoy. If he’s not versatile enough for you already and you enjoy riding English more than western, Shady has also gone under english tack where he’s schooled low level dressage tests and has schooled over fences; both in a show jumping arena and out on the cross country course. Like with everything else that has ever been presented to him, Shady took to the English side of things with no hesitations and has shown he would make an excellent field trial mount as well. 

 

On the ground, Shady is a gentleman for all. He’s quiet at the vet, stands still for the farrier, will ground tie for bathing, saddling, and bridling, and is quiet enough on the ground that our toddler son can lead and handle him safely no matter the setting with no qualms or question from either parent. Shady does well pastured with others and will almost always meet you halfway in the pasture to be caught, stalls with no issues or quirks, and will load right up into any trailer with no hesitation then back out like one should. We also know Shady’s whole history, right down to the time he was foaled, as we’ve spoken to his breeder and an extremely good friend of ours is the one that bought Shady from his breeder, started him, and rode him until we bought him.
